E-HOW to make your very own 'Personal Dictionary'
  1. Start with a blank notebook
  2. Write a letter of the alphabet on each page starting with A, B, C, etc.
  3. Whenever you come across (hear, read, etc) a new word, idiom, collocation, or expression, write it down in your PD (Personal Dictionary).
  4. For example: Page A - Apple, (noun), red fruit that grows on trees
  5. When you hear an idiom or collocation with that word, add it to your 'notes'.
  6. For example: Page B - Book, (noun), (idiom) "You can read me like a book" (means I can't hide my feelings)
  7. Also, some words have different meanings in different contexts.
  8. Write sentences using the word in different forms and using different definitions.
  9. Practice: before you go to bed at night, try to read your words and phrases from your "Personal Dictionary".
  10. The use your new expressions 'on the street.'
  11. Finally, BRAVO, tell us all how it went !

My Personal Dictionary

When I started to learn English language I did my first personal dictionary. It was almost three years ago.
I bought 120 pages notebook.I cut a little the right edge of each page. On the remaining pieces of the edges I wrote all letters in alphabetical order. I left a few blank pages between each letter.
I was satisfied with my work because I could see every letter and I could fast find suitable pages.
I wrote every word that I didn't understand and I wrote its pronunciation and of course its meaning in Polish language.
Sometimes I wrote this word with collocations and idioms.
First I don't know many English words and my dictionary has many pages full.
I noticed that I made a terrible mistake. I looked at real dictionary and I noticed that every language has different number of words starting in certain letters.
English language has the most words starting with the letter "s".
I had a problem because I hadn't any blank pages left for new words with the first letter "s".
I bought the same second notebook and I used glue and paste in new pages.
Now my personal dictionary is very thick and full. Probably I must buy a new notebook.
Anyway I think how many words from the dictionary I remember?
I noticed that sometimes I have to check in my dictionary the meaning of a word many times.
I would say my memory is not very good.
